This was a complete decoration package for a grade II listed building in the heart of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. Special consideration had to be made in using products and techniques to highlight the buildings old features whilst also adding a modern touch.
Works Completed:
External:
Metal windows: the windows were initially sand blasted to remove hundreds of years worth of paint, the metal frames were then treated with self priming smooth metal and fully coated in its original black colour.
Timber Windows: due to some of the timber windows being beyond repair, 2 elevations were replaced with new conservation style windows. Our challenge was to make the new and old windows look as similar as possible. To achieve this we stripped back all the existing paint by use of paint strippers, primed, undercoated and top coated with a flexible satin paint to ensure durability and protect from exposure.
External masonry: some elements of the masonry was badly damaged; we repaired this using an external filler 2 part compound and top coated with a mineral based exterior masonry paint.
Internal Work:
Walls: the majority of the walls were new plaster so were mist coated and 2 full coats of vinyl matt emulsion. There was a range of heritage colours used throughout the building on various sections.
Woodwork: once again the majority of the woodwork was new so was primed, undercoated and top coated with aqua satin.
Existing Timber Partitions: Due to the timber partitions not being compliant with current building regulations, we applied an intumescent paint to the surfaces with afforded a 60 min fire rating and top coated with aqua satin in sage green.
Timber beams: these were sanded back to bare and then rag applied light teak oil to restore its original beauty.
As far as projects go, this has been the most challenging to date. Due to a lot of specification changes due to conservation involvement, this project went through nearly 100 amendments over the duration of the project.
None the less we stepped up to the challenge and works with paint specifiers and manufacturers to ensure we were in keeping with the design and conservation even to the point of sourcing matt finish intumescent paint to protect the 200 year old doors whilst making the building fire compliant.
